DISPUTES THAT WILL CHANGE THE MARKETR-CALF (Ranchers Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America) continues its pursuit to ban live Canadian cattle into the United States. The border was scheduled to open March 7th but U.S. District Court Judge Richard Cebull passed an injunction barring the importation. The National Meat Association (NMA) has appealed to intervened and stated that the continued closure of the Canadian border is harmful to the U.S. beef processing industry. USDA and R-CALF have until March 28th to submit their briefs. Currently Japan requires that all cattle domestic or imported from any country where BSE has been detected be tested for BSE. Japan’s Food Safety Commission subcommittee has recommended that testing be limited to cattle 21 months old or older. If the Canadian cattle ban is lifted and Japan does not change their testing requirements, U.S. cattle prices are sure to drop from the levels of this past year. Taiwan will reopen its market to beef from the U.S. beginning April 16, 2005 PRIME STEAKHOUSESHigh-end steakhouses that serve USDA Prime steaks, such as Ruth Chris and Fleming’s are showing continued signs of growth. It seems the economic downturn the past few years have not hurt the well-to-do customers. PAY FOR YOUR MISTAKES?It is rare for an employer to charge an employee for their mistake and it may not be the best for morale, but it is legal. If you feel it is warranted you can charge your employee for the cost of their mistake as long as the deduction does not reduce the weekly paycheck to less than minimum wage for the hours worked. Employers need to remember the most cautious workers can make a mistake. KEEPING UP WITH INDUSTRY TRENDSCompanies need to keep up with industry trends and opportunities. The following are a few inexpensive ways to stay in touch.
